RPL

Your experience has value.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a structured process for identifying, assessing and recognising knowledge, skills and competencies gained through work, previous learning, informal training, community activities or life experience.

At SEGTI, RPL is currently offered in Chaplaincy & Christian Ministry.

What RPL means

The question is not only where you learned something. It is what you know and can demonstrate against the relevant learning outcomes or competency standards.

RPL is an assessment process. Experience must be presented as evidence and assessed against the relevant requirements. It is not an automatic qualification.

How RPL works

From an expression of interest to a supported assessment outcome.

01

Expression of Interest

Tell SEGTI about your experience and what you want recognised.

02

Initial Guidance

Your experience and intended area are reviewed to determine whether an appropriate pathway may exist.

03

Evidence Preparation

Prepare a portfolio such as a CV, certificates, work samples, references, photographs, videos or performance records.

04

Assessment

Evidence is assessed against relevant outcomes. This may include a portfolio review, conversation, observation or practical demonstration.

05

Outcome

Where requirements are met, recognition proceeds through the appropriate authorised process. Further learning may be recommended where evidence is incomplete.

Build your portfolio of evidence

Evidence requirements vary according to the qualification or competency being assessed.

Work and practice

CVs, job descriptions, work samples, project records and performance reviews.

Learning records

Certificates, previous training, skills records and professional documentation.

People and proof

References, testimonials, photographs, videos and other relevant evidence.

RPL is not

It is not an automatic certificate for work experience, a shortcut that bypasses assessment, a guarantee of qualification, simply submitting a CV, or a direct conversion of a job title into an academic qualification.

RPL itself is broader than Chaplaincy and Christian Ministry. If your area of expertise is outside this current offering, you are still welcome to submit an Expression of Interest so SEGTI can advise whether an appropriate pathway is available.

RPL questions

Who can apply?

People with relevant learning from employment, self-employment, ministry, professional practice, voluntary work, informal training, workshops, community work, previous study or life experience.

Do I need to have attended college?

No. RPL considers learning from different contexts, but the evidence still has to meet the applicable requirements.

Does RPL automatically give a certificate?

No. An outcome depends on assessment against the relevant standards and the authorised recognition process.

What if my evidence is insufficient?

SEGTI may advise on additional evidence, further learning or skills development where needed.
